CTV Agentic Buying FAQ: 20 Questions Answered
Agentic CTV buying is the use of AI agents, one acting for the buyer and one for the seller, to find, negotiate and activate connected TV deals within limits that people set. The agents handle the back-and-forth that used to run through emails and insertion orders, and a person still decides what they may agree.
TL;DR: CTV has become the first serious test for agent-to-agent trading because so much of its value sits in bespoke packages, sponsorships and negotiated deal terms. Live campaigns already run through seller agents, ad servers and AI assistants on the buy side, organised around two open standards: IAB Tech Lab's Agentic Advertising Management Protocols (AAMP) and the Ad Context Protocol (AdCP). The open questions are now about accountability: what the agent agreed, whether those terms protect the buyer, and who can check the record afterwards.
What is agentic CTV buying, and why does it start with TV?
What is agentic CTV buying?
Agentic CTV buying is a workflow in which a buyer's AI agent takes a brief, finds suitable streaming inventory and agrees terms with a seller's agent or system. People set the brief, the limits and the sign-off points. AgenticAdvertising.org dates the first agent-to-agent media buy to 16 October 2025, using real inventory from LG Ads with human oversight.
Why is CTV the first real test for agentic advertising?
CTV value sits in specifics such as premium placements, sponsorships and guaranteed delivery, which have long needed manual coordination across several systems. Frans Vermeulen, co-founder of Swivel, argued in an AdExchanger column in April 2026 that this coordination load explains "why the channel is becoming the first proving ground for agentic trading". Warner Bros. Discovery's Jill Steinhauser told Digiday in May 2026 she could see "the upfront work to get a Deal ID live really benefitting from agentic workflows".
Does agentic buying replace programmatic for CTV?
Not on current evidence. NBCUniversal's Ryan McConville told AdExchanger in January 2026 that agents sit on top of programmatic and automate steps that have stayed manual, such as setting up a deal ID. Asked by Digiday whether agentic buying will replace programmatic, he said it "gives you the optionality. But no, not necessarily."
Who stays in control when agents buy CTV?
People set the brief and the limits, and several published CTV pilots keep human sign-off at defined points. When agency H/L bought LG home screen inventory through Magnite's seller agent, the agent-led plan was approved by LG and H/L before it went live, AdExchanger reported. InterMedia's Sydney Brower put the principle plainly to AdExchanger: "You can trust AI to fly a plane, but I still want a pilot in the cockpit to watch it."
How does agent-to-agent negotiation work for CTV inventory?
What do agentic marketplaces offer CTV advertisers?
An agentic marketplace gives buyer and seller agents a shared place to discover inventory, agree terms and keep a record of the deal, and Pierre Fabre's Tom El-Bez told AdExchanger that having channels aggregated in one place "broadens our accessible inventory". Alkimi is one worked example: buyers and sellers build their own agents in its Gym, set the rules those agents work to and spar against counterparty agents before any real money moves. Deals then run on its neutral Marketplace, where a person approves each deal and the terms are written at agreement to a DealSheet, timestamped and held by both parties.
How does agent-to-agent negotiation apply to CTV inventory?
The buyer's agent opens with a brief, the seller's agent replies with proposals drawn from availability and impression forecasts, and the two refine the package before people approve it. In NBCUniversal's pilot with RPA, Newton Research and FreeWheel, the buy-side agent requested proposals for linear and streaming inventory, the agents refined them through automated feedback loops, and the campaign executed once humans on both sides signed off (AdExchanger). The guide to how AI agents negotiate CTV inventory deals covers mandates and deal records.
What can agents negotiate in CTV that auctions handle less easily?
Agents can work with bespoke formats and packages that do not fit a standard bid request. Swivel's Vermeulen told AdExchanger that an advertiser could buy the first or last slot of every ad break in live sport, or a full-screen takeover at the end of a game. The comparison of the four ways to buy CTV sets agent-negotiated deals alongside open auction, PMPs and programmatic guaranteed.
Which programmatic platforms support agent-based CTV buying?
Paramount told Digiday that its seller agent, in closed beta, will let clients connect buyer agents through both IAB Tech Lab's AAMP and AdCP. Magnite made LG Ad Solutions' Home Screen inventory available for agentic buying through its Seller Agent in October 2026 (Magnite), and FreeWheel, which executed NBCUniversal's agentic pilot, has built an MCP server using AdCP (AdExchanger). Swivel's seller agents connect with Olyzon's buyer agents through AdCP for CTV activations that include premium OEM inventory (Swivel announcement).
Which buyer-side tools are being used for agentic CTV?
Several published CTV examples start in a general AI assistant connected to a buying platform. Butler/Till submitted a natural language CTV brief through Claude, and PubMatic's agents interpreted it, generated the media strategy and initiated campaign setup (PubMatic). InterMedia, an independent agency, uses MCP and API connections with Vibe.co and Olyzon to review CTV reporting and direct changes from one window (AdExchanger).
Which standards apply to agentic CTV buying?
Which standards govern agent-to-agent CTV deals?
The two open standards most often cited are IAB Tech Lab's AAMP and AdCP. AAMP builds on existing industry standards, and its 2.0 release added the Deals API so agents can transact Programmatic Guaranteed, Preferred Deals, PMPs, the open marketplace and Linear GRPs, a range that maps closely onto how TV and CTV are sold. AdCP, published by AgenticAdvertising.org and now generally available as version 3.2, describes itself as the open protocol that lets agents "discover, plan, buy, sell, and measure media across every channel".
What is OpenProposal, and why does it matter for CTV?
OpenProposal is the AAMP 3.0 specification for the stage between an RFP and a buy commitment, which IAB Tech Lab says "has historically been handled largely through human and manual workflows" (IAB Tech Lab, 22 September 2026). It lets sellers publish packages and answer briefs in an agent-readable format, then carries a proposal through discovery, comparison, qualification, negotiation, execution and reporting. CTV deals built on custom packages and upfront negotiation sit in that stage, and public comment, first set to close on 22 October, now runs until 10 November 2026.
How do CTV sellers know which agent they are dealing with?
Under AAMP, agent identity runs through the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry, which the Tech Lab describes as "a trusted framework for agent identity, verification, and disclosure" (IAB Tech Lab). The registry is free for members and non-members to join. For a CTV seller, knowing who stands behind a buyer agent matters before premium inventory is committed.
How are agentic CTV deals measured and verified?
What should a CTV deal record contain when agents negotiate it?
The record should hold every term the agents agreed, including inventory, flight dates, frequency, viewability and make-good conditions, written at the moment of agreement and retrievable by both sides. Without it, a buyer cannot check delivery against what its agent promised, and a seller cannot show what it committed to. The guide to CTV viewability floors when the buyer is an AI sets out the contract language in more depth.
Do AI buyers secure strong viewability terms?
Benchmark evidence suggests they do not do so reliably. In Concourse Bench v1, 55 of 96 registered runs completed a buy, but 95 of the 110 signed contracts in those buys promised a viewability floor below 70%. Completing a deal and protecting the buyer are separate measures, so both need testing.
Which CTV measurement problems do agents inherit?
Agents inherit the measurement gaps of the channel itself. The Media Rating Council's CTV questions for suppliers and vendors ask how they detect server-side ad insertion, how they account for "TV Off" when a screen is off but a device keeps playing, and whether they apply general and sophisticated invalid traffic filtering to CTV. A buyer agent's mandate should name which measurement source settles each of those questions.
How does performance data get back to the agents?
In AAMP 3.0, reporting is the last of seven stages, with performance flowing back "through existing reporting standards, allowing results to be evaluated against the original objectives and commitments of the plan" (IAB Tech Lab). That closes the loop between what the agent was asked to buy and what was delivered, provided both sides agreed the measurement sources at the start.
How should a team get started with agentic CTV buying?
What should a CTV buying mandate for an agent include?
A mandate is the written instruction set an agent cannot exceed: audiences, content categories to include or avoid, flight dates, frequency limits, minimum viewability and completion terms, and the point at which a person must approve. CTV adds format choices such as home screen, mid-roll or live sport slots, and each needs its own rules.
How much autonomy should a CTV buying agent start with?
Less than it will eventually have. A useful sequence is earned autonomy, which runs Observe, Recommend, Draft, Human-approved action, then Bounded automatic action, with the agent moving up only when its record justifies it. InterMedia runs the majority of its biddable campaigns through an agentic workflow, yet Brower typically double checks inputs in each DSP before giving the go-ahead (AdExchanger).
Can smaller advertisers buy CTV through agents?
Yes, and smaller advertisers are among the early users. Vibe.co chief executive Arthur Querou told AdExchanger that more than 1,000 brands had adopted its MCP integration, adding that "SMBs use these tools". For a smaller buyer, a clear mandate matters as much as access.
What should a team test before live money moves?
Test the data first, then the agent. Seller catalogues and buyer audience definitions need to be clean and consistent before an agent can read them correctly. Running a buyer agent against realistic counterparty agents then shows whether it holds its limits on viewability, frequency and approvals before a real budget is exposed.
What comes next for agentic CTV buying?
Standards work is moving as quickly as the pilots. AAMP 3.0 brings agents into the RFP and proposal stage, AdCP 3.2 is generally available, and CTV sellers such as Paramount are preparing to accept buyer agents through both.
Alkimi, which runs the Concourse benchmark cited above, filed comments and change requests during the OpenProposal v3.0 public comment period, which IAB Tech Lab has extended to 10 November 2026. Its Marketplace works within IAB Tech Lab's AAMP framework today and is being built to be AdCP compatible.
